His flatmate often kept irregular hours, stirring in the middle of the night and pacing about behind the thin partition wall, sometimes leaving the flat. So he thought nothing particular of it when he was woken by movement in Jelka’s bedroom, then out in the hallway; a slit of light appeared under his door, then was gone. The front door opened then closed, softly.

He glanced at the alarm clock: two fifteen. He drifted back to sleep.

The next morning, she was waiting for him in the kitchen, dark smudges under her eyes and her hair in straggles. She seemed triumphant, yet curiously nervous. She took his arm and almost dragged him out the front door and across the landing to the studio, hardly leaving him time to slip thongs on his bare feet.

‘What do you think?’ She looked into his face, focus darting from one eye to the other…
