Why I’ve given up on Medium

Stats and inferences

On Medium, I have approximately 700 followers, approximately 0.5% of whom ever read my stuff.

On the other hand, I have approximately 200 subscribers on Substack, of whom 40% appear to read my serial stories every single week. Or at least, they open the emails. It may be higher, because Mac email accounts withhold some information from email senders. It may be lower.

For paid subscribers, unsurprisingly, the open rate is 100%.

A lot of these subscribers have been with me since February 2022, when I launched my Substack.

It seems a reasonable inference, then, that it doesn’t just amuse me to make shit up. People, quite a lot of people, enjoy the shit I make up. It must be some okay shit, man. Not perfect, not by any means, but worth a read, you’d have thought.

Just not on Medium.

Not any more. For whatever reason, this is not the platform it was back in early 2021. In the midst of a COVID lockdown, it was Medium that got me writing fiction, gave me a community when I had none, and for that I will always be grateful.

Well, I asked for it
